“Find my iPhone” works for lost iPhones, iPads, Macs, and more, but you can also use “Find my AirPods” if you misplace your AirPods.

When the AirPods aren’t connected to an iOS device via Bluetooth, Find My AirPods won’t function, but it can pinpoint the location of AirPods lost nearby and indicates where they might be found if they’ve gone out of range.

Find My AirPods can only find lost AirPods — not a case or when the AirPods are not connected to the iPhone or stored in the case.

Here’s how to use Find My AirPods.

You can find my AirPods in the “Find My” app on iCloud.com and  iOS. They’ll appear on the Find My map just like an iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, or Mac when they’re out of their case and connected to the iPhone.

When you set your AirPods down, they are most likely to be misplaced or lost since there are no cords to keep them together or to help you locate them. By playing a sound, Find My AirPods helps you locate an AirPod nearby.

  1. Use “Find My” on iOS or iCloud.com.
  2. Select the AirPods.
  3. Then tap “Actions.”
  4. Click “Play Sound.”

After you initiate the “Play Sound” command, a soft chirping sound will start playing and will gradually grow louder to help locate your AirPods.

If only one AirPod is missing, you can also muffle the sound on the left or right. Tap “Stop Playing” to stop the sound once your AirPods are located. Putting them back in their case will also silence them.

Find My can’t track the exact location of your AirPods if they aren’t connected to your iPhone. It displays the last known location of the AirPods when they were connected to an iPhone.

When they were last connected to your iPhone over Bluetooth, even if the AirPods are moved, their location when they were last connected to your iPhone will be shown, even if they are left behind.

Because of this, using Find My AirPods to find an AirPod left behind won’t be especially accurate, but it can provide a general idea of where you left them so you can locate them again.

You can locate an AirPod this way by tapping the little car icon. That will give you directions via Apple Maps.

Find My AirPods limitations:

The AirPods cannot play audio while they’re in the AirPods Case, so if you lose them, you’re out of luck.

Moreover, locating a lost AirPods case is impossible because Find My AirPods requires a Bluetooth connection.

How can I replace an AirPod or AirPods case that has been lost?

In case you lose an AirPod and can’t find it, Apple offers replacements. To replace one AirPod or the AirPods Charging Case will cost you $69 each.
