Because the iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR lack Home buttons, Apple created a new way for forcing a restart.

A force restart is the fastest way to restore your iPhone back to normal if it’s acting up, and while it’s not immediately obvious, once you find it out, it’s the fastest way to get it back to normal.

iPhone XS, Apple X , iPhone XR and iPhone XS Max hard resetting

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  2. Then press and release the Volume Down button rapidly..
  3. Hold the Side button down until the Apple logo appears, then let go.

You’ll see a slider to turn off your iPhone during this process. Don’t worry about it, simply keep pressed the Side button until the screen goes black. The Apple logo will appear after that, and the screen will operate again after a restart.

While restarting force, you don’t have to shut down the iPhone completely, which takes more steps.

Go to the General section of the Settings app, scroll to the bottom, and pick Shut Down to turn off the iPhone.

Holding down the Volume Up and Side buttons at the same time can bring up the Emergency SOS interface, which also has a “slide to power off” option.
